James and the Giant Peach JR - Principal Cast (GR 6-12)

This production of James and the Giant Peach JR will be directed, designed, and managed by Stage Door, Upstart Crow's youth performance troupe. These middle and high school students, with strong mentorship by UCYT staff members, are taking on directing, stage managing, costuming, choreographing, and designing, in addition to performing in the show! We're excited to provide opportunities such as this as part of our Stage Door leadership development program. Casting will be conducted by a panel of UCYT staff.

A delightfully offbeat adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl adventure, a boy and his insect friends take an amazing journey across the ocean. Based on one of Roald Dahl’s most poignantly quirky stories, Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach JR. is a brand new take on this "masterpeach" of a tale.  Featuring a wickedly tuneful score and a witty and charming book, this adventurous musical about courage and self-discovery is destined to be a classic.

When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that grows a tremendous peach, rolls into the ocean and launches a journey of enormous proportions. James befriends a collection of singing insects that ride the giant piece of fruit across the ocean, facing hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements along the way.
 

Rehearsal Schedule:
All rehearsals and performances will be held at our new Eugene location: 2101 Bailey Hill Road (between Fitness 1440 and ATOS NW Jiu Jitsu)

Rehearsals begin: Monday, February 16th
Mondays/Wednesdays 5:00-7:30pm (5:00-8:30pm on 4/20 and 4/22)
Friday, April 10th 1:00-5:30pm “No School Day Rehearsal”

Sunday, April 19th 1:00-5:30pm  

No rehearsal week of 3/9-3/13 (Wizard of Oz Tech Week)

No rehearsal week of 3/23-3/27 (Spring Break)

On any given rehearsal day, cast members may be called for the full rehearsal call, a portion of the day’s schedule, or none of the day’s scheduled rehearsal - depending on what songs or scenes we will be working on that day. 

Finalized rehearsal schedules will be posted two days in advance.

Wizard of Oz:
Students enrolled in The Wizard of Oz may still participate in James and the Giant Peach JR. The daily rehearsal schedules for these two productions do not conflict. James and the Giant Peach primarily rehearses MON/WED and Wizard of Oz primarily rehearses TU/TH/FR. There will be 3 weeks of overlapping rehearsals where students may be called for rehearsals for both productions.

Tech Week: No conflicts accepted
April 27-April 30, 5:00-9:00pm

Performances: No conflicts accepted
Friday 5/1, 8pm
Saturday, 5/2, 2pm
Saturday, 5/2, 7pm
Sunday, 5/3, 2pm
If your cast member has a conflict with any of those dates, they aren’t eligible to participate in this production.

Cast families must respond to the Rehearsal Conflict Survey before casting and declare any conflicts with the published rehearsal schedule. Cast members may have a limited number of pre-approved rehearsal conflicts and still have a successful experience if those conflicts are submitted before casting. Conflict submissions are due by Tuesday, January 27th.
Note: Students will NOT be included in the cast list if we do not receive a response to the rehearsal conflicts survey.

Parent Volunteer Hours:

Principal cast families are required to volunteer at least 8 hours for this production or to buyout the required volunteer hours at $15 per hour. Volunteer opportunities include helping make costumes, set painting, set building, costume or prop shopping, providing supervision at dress rehearsals and performances, ushering, selling concessions, etc.

AUDITIONS FOR JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH JR

There are two parts to our audition process - INDIVIDUAL auditions and GROUP auditions. Please read the following information completely. Following audition directions carefully is an important part of showing your commitment to the audition process and presenting your best work to the production team who will cast you in this show. Audition requirements are based on:

1. your student’s status of NEW vs. RETURNING 

2. whether they would like to be considered for a specific role.
 

INDIVIDUAL AUDITIONS

Individual auditions include:

1. An acting audition

2. A vocal audition. 

Is my student required to prepare an individual audition to participate in James and the Giant Peach?
If they are a returning student who has previously participated in the principal cast of a UCYT production - then YES, they are required to submit an individual audition.

If they are new to UCYT or have only participated in one of our Squad or Crew casts (not principal cast) then NO, they are not required to submit an individual audition UNLESS they would like to be considered for a specific role. 

If they would like to be considered for a specific role (principal or supporting role) then YES, they must prepare an individual audition, regardless of their status as a new or returning principal cast member.
 

GROUP AUDITIONS

ALL cast members, new and returning, participate in group auditions. At group auditions, we’ll get to know each other, learn a short segment of the show choreography together, and participate in cold reads. Bring a snack and a water bottle, wear comfortable clothes and shoes you can move in, and be prepared to have fun!

Group auditions for James and the Giant Peach will be held Thursday, 12/18 from 5:00-8:30pm.
